Where can I get Bitcoins?

Step 1:

First, there is the online wallet or the bitcoin client. One requires no installation while the other needs a software installation.

Online Wallet
You can use an online wallet such as flexcoin. With this option you don’t have to install anything, but you have to take great care not to lose your password and you need to trust the site operator to keep your wallet safe.

Bitcoin Client
If you prefer to have your Bitcoins locally on your computer, you have to install a software on your PC. The Original Bitcoin Client can be downloaded at Bitcoin.org. The software will automatically create a wallet for you and start downloading the transaction history after you start it the first time.

Step 2:

Once you have a wallet, the second step will be to get some Bitcoins into your wallet through one of several currency exchanges, such as Coinbase (using your US bank account), and Bitstamp. 

Step 3:

Due diligence must be given to how you purchase through the exchanges. There has been situations where a freeze on withdrawals  due to transaction malleability, multiple DDoS attacks across the exchanges, and resulting in a consequent plunge in price. You buy at your own risk and due diligence.
